French Farm House – Exterior Walls and Wood
To develop an authentic looking home exterior replicating an old European farmhouse that had been enlarged (added to) over successive generations. The project required slight variations in surface textures and coloration’s for different sections of the home in order convey differences in old build materials, techniques, and weathering.
- O’Guin was brought into the project early by the architect, assisting with material, design, budgetary and timing considerations.
- Custom coloration’s, aging techniques and textures for each section of the home were composed and submitted for approval
- Training and continual on-site technical support for stucco installers was provided by O’Guin to ensure aesthetics were achieved consistent with approved samples and installation quality control was met.
- O’Guin’s own artisan crew was utilized to hand-carve embedded “rubble rock” exposed stones and distressed stucco areas.
Interior and exterior hand-textured and aged wood finishes were also completed by the O’Guin crew to convert new wood for ceilings and beams to the “patina” of weathering and aging. This was achieved through careful scraping and wire brushing of the wood before the installation, then artfully applying natural lime paints to create the patina.
About O’Guin Decorative Finishes, “You certainly understood our vision of creating a centuries-old French farmhouse and had the imagination and skill to help make it a reality. Your handiwork prompted one passerby to lament that it was too bad our new house already looked so old and well used. Couldn’t think of a better “compliment”. – Homeowner

To work with architect, design team and client to develop an old world exterior stucco finish and a full package of breathable interior wall finishes that included Venetian plasters, glazing, wood finishes, gold gilding, trompe loeil, European paints and custom textures.
The exterior color and texture development included an on-site mockup of completed coloration and textural ArcusStone finish. For the installation, O’Guin provided the on-site training and supervision of stucco crew to achieve the desired mottled, aged and uneven appearance.
The interior finishes included the composition of an aesthetically harmonious group of materials that also contributed to indoor air quality and mold resistance because of southwest Florida’s climate. The materials group consisted of polished venetian plasters, glazing, Keim paints, gold leaf, trompe l’ oeil painting. For the staircase and back hallways, high end commercial finishes were used to resist scuffs and wear. O’Guin installed all selected finishes against a compressed project schedule, so careful daily coordination with the general contractor and other trades was required throughout the project.
“Christopher is one of the rare individuals who can work with a client to develop a vision and then has the capability to execute it. He did an outstanding job on our house-adding many creative touches that took our house from good to extraordinary.
We have nothing but compliments from all those who see the work ODF did for us. Christopher and his team are masters in their craft-able to create such beautiful and extraordinary finishes. We especially love the gorgeous Venetian plasters inside our house and the unique, beautifully textured finish of the exterior facade. We would recommend Christopher without reservation.” – Homeowner
